JOB SUMMARY:

This position will assist the Coding Manager with coordinating the daily operations for the coding department to include: coder/abstractor/charging training, coder education, performance audits, daily work distribution, and monitoring of accounts receivable issues related to coding. Work closely with Patient Financial Services to resolve unbilled account issues. Responsible for coding diagnoses and procedures and abstracting of medical information from all hospital based encounters served at Rady Children's Hospital - San Diego. It includes capturing co morbidities and complications, procedure code modifiers, and appropriate sequencing. Data specific to each visit is abstracted into Epic Electronic Medical Record for the revenue cycle, research, OSHPD, data comparison studies, and medical record reviews. In addition to coding and abstracting, this position also assists with the Hospital Revenue Cycle process by performing charge capture for patients seen in the Emergency Care Center and satellite Urgent Care Centers. Position also works closely with CDI on documentation improvement projects and systems testing with Health Information Information Systems Analysts as needed.

MINIMUM qualifications:

Associate's Degree in area of study in a field related to the position

2 years of experience

Certified Coding Specialist

Registered Health Info Admin/Tech

Possesses strong communication skills adaptable to a wide variety of interpersonal encounters with various health care professionals

Strong computer/PC skills essential

Ability to code hospital and ambulatory facility patient encounters, as well as training, educating, auditing, and supervising outpatient coding team

Expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS and CPT-4 coding nomenclature as well as medical record science, medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, pathophysiology, data entry/display, and other advance coding principles and reimbursement methodology

Ability to educate and answer coding questions from team and outside departments

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree

5 years of experience

Experience working with Computer Assisted Coding Application

Extensive hospital coding experience

Pediatric experience strongly preferred

Experience and understanding of ICD-10 coding and training

Experience with working within an Electronic Medical Record environment, preferably Epic

Experience with documentation requirements, and ED/UC facility reimbursement

Experience with 3M encoder
