The Rady Children's Emergency Department is a Lantern-awarded Level I Trauma Center with 42 beds, including two trauma rooms. We are the only pediatric emergency department within the San Diego region and operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. We are proud to have a big team that values strong collaboration and communication across disciplines. We are a busy department that cares for over 300 patients each day, with a census of 103,000 patients last year, and includes a growing population of behavioral health patients that exceeded 4,700 patients in the previous year.
The ED Medic team member functions as part of our Emergency Department team caring for our medical and behavioral health patients. ED Medics support and collaborate with our care team of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, child life and more to provide safe care for our patients. They assist in the triage areas by gathering vital signs, administering appropriate standing orders within scope, rooming patients, and providing comfort care. They can assist with placing peripheral IVs (once certified), urine catheterization, EKGs, splinting, POCTS such as streps, urinalysis, glucose checks, covid swabs, urine pregnancy tests and assist with procedure holds for laceration repairs and lumbar punctures etc. They assist with transporting patients to CT, MRI, PICU, the Floor and assist in traumas with CPR, blood retrieval etc. They also are trained to do intake for our robust behavioral health pediatric population. Each day within the department is different and you may work in several different zones within one shift. Our Medics are not given patient assignments within zones but support RNs within the specific zones. They should be flexible and adaptable and comfortable, changing hats and responsibilities to assist with the needs of the department at any time during their shift. They should be strong communicators, team players and comfortable with de-escalation techniques and managing challenging behaviors.
