Rady Children's Hospital San Diego is the only children's hosptial in San Diego and performs over 300 open heart surgeries a year for a total of 500 cases. Our newly-developed heart transplant program has performed 6 heart transplants in 2015, its first year of existence. The CVICU delivers excellent critical care management and utilizes state of the art technology, including mechanical circulatory support with ECMO and VADs. The NP team is a highly valued asset in the CVICU, providing coverate and working in collaboration with surgery, cardiology, PICU, and consultative service lines.

Our 12-bed CVICU functions within a 30-bed Acute Cardiac Unit providing cardiac inpatient care for newborns to adults.


The ICU Nurse Practitioner delivers primary care to acute, critical, complex and chronically ill patient
population collaboratively with the Divisions of Critical Care Medicine and Cardiac Intensivist's teams. The Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive: physical assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation for patients and their families. The Nurse Practitioner also provides acute resuscitation, on-going multi-disciplinary medical management, transitional care to sub-acute areas, critical care consultations & evaluations, psychosocial support, & health education to patients & their families in the critical care arena. The Nurse Practitioner also functions as a clinical leader, consultant and educator in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and all healthcare team members. The Nurse Practitioner supports the philosophies of the department of nursing, as well as the medical staff. The Nurse Practitioner responsibilities for coverage can include but not limited to: 7 days/week coverage, Holidays, weekends, night shifts. The Critical Care Nurse Practitioner also performs procedures under Standardized Procedures within the Critical Care Specialties per Medical Staff Privileges..(The "Critical Care" NP is defined as:
a. Critical Care-level patient, typically defined as:
i. Neonatal patient
ii. PICU patient
iii. CVICU patient
b. "Critical Care" means the NP is clinically-supervised by an ICU-credentialed physician.
c. Credentialed in Med Staff with critical-care-defined competencies.
d. Generally, they are working in a unit that is a 24/7 operation. Schedules are not limited to Monday-Friday w/ limited or no holidays)


Master's Degree in Nursing

5 years of experience

California RN License

Nurse Practitioner, State of CA

BLS for Healthcare Providers, issued by AHA

PALS Certification (Issued by American Heart Association)

Nurse Practitioner Furnishing, State of California- Upon hire but obtained no later than 12 months of employment or sooner based on department needs

Nurse Practitioner Furnishing, State of California, Controlled Substance II Privileges (Upon hire but no later than 1 month after obtaining NPF)

Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) number: CS II thru V (Upon hire but no later than within 1 month of obtaining NPF & CSII privileges)

National NP certification or eligible, obtained within 6 months of employment

Medicare Billing number (NPI- National Provider Identifier); Upon hire but no later than 3 months of employment

Completion of a mandatory RCHSD critical care NP orientation
Successfully complete the credentialing process through Medical Staff Services


7 years of experience

Seven years of experience in clinical nursing with emphasis in pediatric critical care

Experience as a Nurse Practitioner in Pediatric Critical Care

Formal education and/or lecturing skills
