The (RN) Newborn Screener is responsible for calling out and tracking all complex positive NBS screens and referring to appropriate California Children-s Services (CCS) approved Metabolic, Endocrine, and Hematology Specialists and CCS Centers. Using clinical expertise, notifies and assists physicians with interpretation of NBS results within time frames required by the contract Scope of Work. Informs physicians of California NBS legal requirements and establishes standards for follow-up. Functions as team leader in developing, coordinating, and conducting site visits and in-services per Scope of Work to the hospital/facilities in Orange, Riverside, Imperial and San Diego counties. Completes and submits Service Authorization Request form (SAR), Expedited Diagnostic Service Request form to the appropriate CCS clinic. Provides consultation, training and education to physicians and hospital staff on testing and tracking requirements, as directed under Title 17 regulations and NBS Scope of Work. Provides on-site training to physicians, nursing, clerical, records departments, and laboratory staff to improve collection techniques, form completion, specimen transport, and physician follow-up for NBS testing/recollection/recall or confirmatory testing. Provides specialized phone and onsite consultation to Health Care providers and facilitiess regarding NBS practices, regulations and guidelines. Provides weekend call for all appropriate cases within the time frames required by the contract Scope of Work. The (RN) Newborn Screener may hold primary responsibility and serve as a resource for one or more of the following functions: Call out and track routine/non-complex positives; facilitate referral for parents to physician offices, clinics, CCS Special Care Centers, or paneled specialists. Function as back up to Community Liaison for non-NICU inadequate and earlies. Identifies and evaluates web sites and other educational materials for families; coordinates reviews of educational materials with GDB health educators. Assists with HEPPs/tracking of hospital deficiencies, etc. Assists with OHs (born Out of Hospital), NOs (Not Obtained), and MRs (Missing Results). Assists with annual planning process and implementation of plan.
